When Manhunter was released in 1986, it was panned as a "hokey," "chic, well-cast wasteland," whose plot fell apart "like the shattered mirrors that figure in the crime" by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, respectively. The mainstream media, as usual, were wrong.
